The Award

Coach John Wooden

The “Keys to Life” Award is named in honor of Coach John Wooden who, during his years at UCLA, guided the Bruins to 10 National Championships, seven consecutive, as well as 19 conference titles. The award is based on a seven-point creed given to Wooden as a child, by his father.

Legends of the Hardwood Award

The “Keys to Life” Award will be presented annually to a member of the college or professional basketball community who is living out Coach Wooden’s 7 "Keys to Life," and who exemplifies outstanding character and leadership on the court, in the work place, in the home, and in the community. award.gif


Coach Wooden’s Keys to Life:
1. Be true to yourself.
2. Help others.
3. Make each day your masterpiece.
4. Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.
5. Make friendship a fine art.
6. Build a shelter against a rainy day.
7. Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day.
